We have been interested in hypothyroidism for many decades. That is partly because Terry Graedon was diagnosed with this condition when she was in graduate school at the University of Michigan. That was a long time ago! She is not alone. Over the last few decades thyroid trouble has climbed dramatically in the US. One analysis concludes that about 30 million people now suffer from hypothyroidism (Journal of the Endocrine Society, Nov. 10, 2022). It is estimated that as many as 15% of these people do not get benefit from “standard” treatment with levothyroxine. What can be done for them?
Why Millions with Thyroid Trouble Don’t Benefit from Levothyroxine:
Terry responds well to levothyroxine (Synthroid). We are grateful that her thyroid treatment has been reasonably straight forward. But millions of people with thyroid trouble do not feel great on standard T4 thyroid support.
We have written an awful lot about this problem over the last few decades. Here is just one article that Terry has written:
How to Overcome Symptoms of Low Thyroid Function and Feel Better
Diagnosing low thyroid function can be tricky, but treating this condition appropriately can help ease the symptoms of hypothyroidism.
The Expert on Thyroid Trouble:
We have a better idea, though. Why not go to one of the world’s experts on treating thyroid trouble that does not respond well to levothyroxine therapy? We have had the honor to interview Dr. Antonio Bianco on several occasions.
Here is our podcast promo to introduce you to this important topic:

Show 1330: Rethinking Hypothyroidism (Archive)
A leading thyroid researcher lays out why we should be rethinking hypothyroidism for patients who don’t respond to standard treatment.
