What Is the Problem with Aluminum in Your Armpits?
Most people do not think twice when it comes to spritzing their pits. They assume that the FDA is protecting them from harmful ingredients in body care products. But not that long ago, there were reports of the carcinogen benzene in some very popular antiperspirant body sprays. You can read about that disaster at this link.
What about aluminum? The FDA requires that all antiperspirants must contain aluminum. Unfortunately, no one knows how much aluminum you absorb through your skin. If that skin is abraded because you just shaved your underarms, you might possibly absorb quite a bit.
Does that matter? Here again, the answer is that no one knows for sure. But there are some studies that trouble us.
The authors of this study write in the journal Free Radical Biology & Medicine (Aug. 23, 2022):
“Mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation and glucose dysmetabolism are pathological signs of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Dietary aluminum (Al) overload is often used to induce AD in rodents and trigger the onset of oxidative-stress hallmarks resembling those of the human disease.”
Writing in the journal Pharmaceuticals (Aug. 17, 2022) the authors state:
“Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is associated with abnormal cognition. AD is aided in its initiation and progression by hereditary and environmental factors. Aluminum (Al) is a neurotoxic agent that causes oxidative stress, which is linked to AD progression.”
The Most Recent Review of Aluminum Exposure:
Researchers offer this systematic review and meta-analysis in the journal Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, September 1, 2025:
“Aluminum (Al) is a widespread environmental contaminant with suspected links to neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between environmental Al exposure and the risk of AD by synthesizing evidence from diverse sources and study designs.
“Our findings suggest that environmental Al exposure may contribute to the development of AD, though it is likely one of several interacting risk factors. Environmental conditions appear to influence both Al bioaccumulation and its neurotoxic effects related to cognitive decline.
“For personal care products, the main concern is for Al exposure via the skin. The dermal uptake of Al is considered to be small or negligible across healthy skin, with ingestion being the dominant route for most of the human population. However, kinetic studies show that aluminum chlorohydrate, an ingredient in many antiperspirants, is taken up in microgram amounts at each use across the skin, representing about 2.5 % of the typical oral exposure over the same period and therefore a small contribution to the body burden. Graves et al. (1990) correlated the frequency of Al antiperspirant usage and increased risk of AD, with the highest quartile of usage displaying an odds ratio of 3.2.
“In conclusion, the evidence indicates a significant association between environmental Al exposure and the risk of AD and dementia. Various sources of Al, such as contaminated water, soil, diet, occupational settings, and medical treatments, contribute to elevated tissue Al levels observed in affected individuals.”
The pro-aluminum folks insist that the amount of aluminum absorbed through skin is small. We would agree. But people who rely upon aluminum-based antiperspirants use them daily, if not more often. That means small exposures over months, years and decades. As far as we can tell, no one has studied the impact of aluminum exposure over such a long time period.
What About Magnesium?
In contrast to aluminum, which is considered neurotoxic, magnesium is an absolutely essential mineral. Your body can function perfectly well without any aluminum. Without magnesium you would be in serious trouble! Symptoms of “hypomagnesemia” include abnormal heart rhythms, muscle cramps, seizures, mental confusion, numbness or tingling in extremities, weakness, breathing difficulties and vertigo. If allowed to continue, low magnesium levels can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death.
We feel pretty comfortable putting milk of magnesia on our skin. And we have found that it helps us smell better (maybe because of its effect on skin microbes). We called our original products MoM (for Milk of Magnesia, aka magnesium hydroxide). Because young people have never heard of “milk of magnesia” and the name confuses them, we are gradually switching over to the name Magnesium Rich for our unscented Aluminum-free roll-on Deodorant:

What Readers Say:
We think milk of magnesia/magnesium hydroxide is a fabulous skin care product. We are not the only ones. Here are some testimonials from readers:
Steve gives us 5 stars (out of 5) for Men’s MoM on 8/17/25:
“I was skeptical. I’ve had heavy underarm perspiration all my life. I’ve tried all sorts of antiperspirants, even prescription ones. They were all aluminum based and they just didn’t work. I read about these magnesium based deodorants, where others said they got relief. So, I decided to order a sampler from People’s Pharmacy and give it a try. The results are great! I’ve been using it for over a year and won’t go back. Highly recommended!”
Elain rates Women’s MoM 5 stars!
“I like this product very much! I have worked outside this summer and never once detected any odor. This is new for me! It goes on easily — no scraping my armpits as with solid deodorants. It does take a few minutes to dry, so I have switched my routine a bit for drying purposes.”
Krista from Pfafftown, NC, wrote:
“Love the MoM deodorant. For all the reasons you mentioned. Please make one with a manly name so my 13 yr old grandson will use it. Seriously!”
That is why we developed Men’s MoM Krista. It is on sale for Labor Day at 15 % discount. The code for all our body care products is Labor15. Please put Labor15 into the discount box on checkout.
Mike in Sutton, WV says that Men’s MoM is the “best deodorant I’ve ever used!
“This product really works. I’ve used aluminum deodorants for years and often had to apply them several times a day. Once a day is all that’s needed for the Men’s MoM.
It’s the only deodorant that I use now. Great product!”
Lest women think they are being left out, we want to emphasize that the herbal fragrance is delightful and women love it too! So, moms love Men’s MoM and can also save 15% by going to this link. Don’t forget the code: Labor15.
Yvonne in Blackshear, GA, is enthusiastic:
“For several years every deodorant I tried would, after a week, begin peeling the skin from under my arms. I tried MOM about two weeks ago. PRESTO! No sore underarms. I am very happy with MOM.”
Maryann in Buffalo, NY, was initially skeptical:
“I recently ordered a bottle of MoM; I only ordered one because I wanted to make sure it worked. Wow, did it ever! The testimonials on this product are to be believed! I had a funky (my description; not exactly body odor!) odor under one armpit when I would sweat excessively. I used a non-aluminum deodorant (Tom’s of Maine). It did not stop the odor. However, MoM has! I love it! Will be ordering more.”
So was Chuck in Raleigh, NC:
“I purchased one bottle of the MoM a couple months or more ago to give it a try as I have always been concerned about the aluminum in regular antiperspirant products. In the past, I always used the strongest product I could find to prevent sweating and odor. I quite frankly was not expecting the MoM to be effective for me as I have tried different alternative products before.
“After trying MoM I was highly surprised and even shocked that it was more effective for me than all of the deodorants I had ever used and ordered six bottles. Wow! It is a little more costly, but it is certainly worth it and the Peace of Mind I get from eliminating aluminum is more than worth the cost.”
We believe we were the first company to offer aluminum-free milk of magnesia (MoM) deodorants. We have never advertised this product except to mention it on our website. It is only sold in a handful of health food stores. This is your chance to save 15% during our Labor Day sale. Here is a link. Just enter the discount code Labor15 when you check out.

That’s why we urge you to check out our new Urea Skin Relief. Urea improves the barrier function of the skin and has wonderful hydrating properties.
Some of our customers have this to say:
“I love this cream for my cracked heels. Just ordered 2 more!”
A woman in Frisco, Texas, wrote:
“I have had dry hands and cuticles ALL MY LIFE. This lotion is a game changer, and I absolutely love it. Not only do my hands feel softer, my cuticles and nails look and feel great (for the first time ever). It is a bit sticky if I put too much on, but that doesn’t last long. I bought this for my daughter, who also loves it, and we don’t plan to ever again be without this lotion. Highly recommend!”
Ellen in Dallas gives us 5 stars for the economy-sized 6 oz. tube:
“Light, not greasy. Smooths on easily. I use it on my feet for calluses and rough spots – does the job.”
Robert in Lexington, VA is also a 5 star reviewer:
“Urea Skin Relief is an ideal moisturizing cream. It is not greasy, and it is completely odorless. It is absorbed quickly, and it does not irritate sensitive skin. I found it heals chapped and scaly areas far better than other creams I’ve tried. Highly recommend.”
