Results of the T Trials are just in and provide more information about the pros and cons of testosterone therapy. This treatment for men whose own testosterone levels are low has been controversial.
What Are the Results of the T Trials?
Researchers from 13 health systems around the United States conducted seven linked studies comparing testosterone therapy to placebo for one year. The volunteers were over 65 and had low levels of this male hormone at the beginning of the trials.
Measuring Bone Strength:
The men who participated in the bone trial had their bone mineral density measured by CT scans at the beginning of the study and again after a year of testosterone therapy. The hormone replacement therapy improved bone density and estimated bone strength significantly more than placebo. This effect was most apparent in the spine, though hip bones also benefited.
The study was not designed to determine whether testosterone can also reduce the risk of fractures.
