Doctors have been debating the best diet for diabetes for years.
In an effort to settle the argument, Australian scientists recruited more than 100 overweight adults with type 2 diabetes to participate in a dietary trial. The volunteers were randomized to consume a low-carb diet that was also low in calories or a high-carb diet matched in calories and focusing on unrefined grains. Both diets were low in saturated fat.
After six months, both groups had lost weight and improved their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. The low-carb diet offered greater benefits in allowing people to reduce their diabetes medication and may be the best choice.
