A lot of loyal fans of our aluminum-free unscented milk of magnesia (MoM) deodorant have been disappointed that we ran out of the economy-size several weeks ago. This product is so popular that we have a hard time keeping in stock.
Why Aluminum-Free MoM?
In case you have not heard the story before, here is a quick summary of the history of how aluminum-free MoM came to be. Around 14 years ago we received a letter from a woman who had been on vacation in Brazil. She left home without an antiperspirant or deodorant. The hot, humid climate left her sweaty and smelly.
While riding in a cab to buy a deodorant, a cab driver told her that milk of magnesia was what Brazilians used. She bought some and was surprised at how helpful it was.
Here was her message to our readers:
“I want to share a remedy I learned about when traveling in Brazil. Just apply milk of magnesia to your armpits. It is the best underarm deodorant!”
How The People’s Pharmacy Aluminum-Free MoM Got Its Start:
Over the last 14 years hundreds of people let us know that milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) was great as a deodorant. Another reader told us that MoM has been used in Cuba for more than 60 years to control body odor.
She said:
“My family still uses it today in the United States, since it’s better than any deodorant.”
We tried milk of magnesia ourselves and were pleased with the results. But there were some downsides to sloshing this liquid laxative on our arm pits.
In those days, most liquid milk of magnesia products came with sodium hypochlorite (bleach) as a preservative. We didn’t like putting even small doses of bleach on our delicate arm pits. In addition, the liquid milk of magnesia was runny. Trying to slosh it on was a bit challenging. Having it run down the side of the chest was also unpleasant.
We contacted Chuck, a renowned natural products chemist and asked him if he could make us a roll-on version of milk of magnesia as a deodorant without the bleach preservative. As far as we can tell, that was the first milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) deodorant in the world. Since then other companies have tried to create a magnesium-based product, but we do not think anyone has improved upon The People’s Pharmacy Aluminum-Free MoM Roll-On deodorant.
