Have you ever wished you could feel better just by using something simple you already had in your kitchen cupboard? It’s not such a far-fetched dream. You probably have a treasure trove of healing sitting on the spice shelf in your pantry, just waiting for you to put it to use.
Spices for Natural Healing:
Q. Other than OTC medication or baking soda, is there a natural product that would reduce and/or eliminate heartburn?
A. There are a number of spices that can make a big difference in easing heartburn. Perhaps the best known is ginger, but there are a number of others. Caraway and fennel seeds can be used preventively. Rosemary and turmeric don’t spring straight to mind, but both have been used to calm that fire in the belly. Of course, a lovely cup of chamomile tea is a classic aid for all kinds of tummy trouble.
Spices to Lower Cholesterol:
Q. Do you have a list of natural herbs /spices for lowering cholesterol?
A. You might not expect spices or herbs to be able to lower cholesterol, but there is quite good evidence that cinnamon can reduce blood cholesterol. Oregano and ginger may also help, along with more exotic flavorings such as caraway, cardamom, lemon balm and saffron.
What About Blood Pressure?
You might be surprised at the herbs and spices that can help nudge blood pressure down a bit: basil can help, and so can cinnamon and cumin.
Cinnamon can also help in keeping blood sugar under control. While it is not a substitute for diabetes medication, it may help some people with type 2 diabetes who are striving to use exercise and a sensible, low-sugar diet to manage their condition.
You Can Learn More:
You don’t have to grab onto the snippets you read on our website and try to remember them. We have an entire book about the spices and herbs in your kitchen cupboard.
When we first brought the book out, readers responded that they wanted an index.
P.K. in Durham, NC was pretty clear about this point:
“I love the info and the detail!…but, I wonder why there is no index, as many times this would be invaluable!
“I realize several herbs may be effective for more than one health concern, but some level of index would be wonnnnnderful for all of us who ordered this from People’s Pharmacy.
“As a Consumer Educator I believe you provide an objective community service at a value rate!”
We listened to P.K. and other readers and have added an index to make the book even easier to use. With the launch of this revised edition we are offering a discount for a limited time.
