Grandma always said to get a good night’s sleep. But how many hours should you snooze? Researchers at the West Virginia University School of Medicine tracked over 30,000 adults who had no heart problems at the start of the study. They found that both short sleepers, less than five hours a night and long sleepers, greater than nine hours nightly, had a substantial increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The magic number appears to be around seven hours a night. The researchers point out that this is an association rather than a cause and effect. Nevertheless, following grandma’s advice to get restful sleep on a regular basis seems sensible.
