Q. Some time ago you mentioned that coffee grounds can stop bleeding from cuts in the kitchen. I have another alternative that I learned at a cooking class.
I cut my finger within the first couple minutes of the class and was bummed that I would have to deal with a bleeding finger for the rest of the day. Then the teacher took some nori (sushi seaweed) and wrapped that around the cut under a bandage. It made the bleeding stop quickly. Since that time I always keep some nori in a little plastic bag on my kitchen counter and have used the remedy several times.
A. Nori is the name for the dark seaweed used to wrap sushi. This is the first we have heard that it could be helpful in stopping bleeding. Other readers have testified about the benefits of ground black pepper, cayenne or sage, as well as coffee grounds. Thank you for sharing your remedy.
You can read more about such kitchen first aid at PeoplesPharmacy.com. One reader wrote about black pepper: “Not only has black pepper stopped my own wounds from bleeding, one friend told me it saved him a trip to the ER. His wife bleeds readily because of blood thinners she must take. It was routine when she cut herself to take her to the hospital. He tried the black pepper and it stopped the bleeding. He sent me a Thank You note which rightly belongs to the People’s Pharmacy. Practical intelligence applied is of great value.” To that we add, common sense is also important. If his wife’s cut hadn’t stopped bleeding, a trip to the ER would have been imperative.
