Prostate cancer is diagnosed in more than 200,000 men each year. Radiation is a common form of treatment and several variations have been developed. A new study compared the effectiveness and safety of different forms of radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer. Proton-beam therapy has been promoted as safer and more effective. But in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, this expensive, high-tech approach was no better than less costly intensity-modulated radiation therapy.
