Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is back with the People’s Pharmacy! We are delighted to announce Crown Laboratories rejoins The People’s Pharmacy family of underwriters, especially since the FDA has just issued new rules about labeling sunscreen.
Despite the proliferation of chemical sunscreens over the last few decades, skin cancer rates are soaring. Melanoma in particular has become much more common. How is it possible that this deadly skin cancer could be rising at the same time we have high SPF sunscreens?
One possible explanation is that many sunscreens have given people a false sense of security. The SPF number (sun protection factor) primarily refers to protection from UVB ultraviolet rays. That means you can slather on the sunscreen and keep from burning or even turning pink. But, at the same time, invisible UVA rays can be penetrating the skin surface and doing damage. Because people can spend so much time out in the sun without burning, many people have accumulated much more UVA exposure than they would have before high SPF sunscreens became available.
Blocking both UVA and UVB is essential to protect the skin against wrinkling, aging and cancer. That’s why the new FDA rules are so important. They specify that “broad spectrum” sunscreens need to provide equal protection against both UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays.
That’s why we appreciate Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sensitive. Because the active ingredients are physical blockers (micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), they already provide protection against UVA and UVB. We think the Blue Lizard “Baby” formulation is great for kids.
