WHAT’S IN YOUR PANTRY?
You would be amazed how many things are available in your kitchen to help with minor medical emergencies or chronic conditions…pickles, olives, black pepper, molasses, onions, vinegar, ice cream, coffee, grape juice and raisins to name just a few of the things that might be safer and more effective than the drugs in your medicine chest. Watch our video for some more examples!
Our new book from National Geographic, The People’s Pharmacy Quick & Handy Home Remedies, has hundreds of remedies that use items you already have on the shelf in your pantry.
Stung by a bee? Try a fresh-cut slice of onion on the spot and feel the pain dissolve. If you don’t have an onion handy, break out the baking soda instead; mix it into a paste with water or, even better, vinegar and slap it on the sting for relief.
For a minor cut, pour on the ground black pepper to stop the bleeding.
To ease joint pain, fresh tart cherries are great. Canned, frozen or dried cherries work too. But if cherries aren’t to your taste, you might try a half teaspoon of turmeric, the yellow spice in curry powder, with your meal. Then there is plant pectin found in Certo mixed with purple grape juice for arthritis or even gin-soaked raisins.
Blood sugar creeping up? Cinnamon, oolong tea, mustard, vinegar and fenugreek may all help get things under control.
Worried about cholesterol? Try Joe’s Brain Boosting Smoothie. It is a great way to start your day. Tastes delicious and its great for you. You will find the recipe on page 241 of The People’s Pharmacy Quick and Handy Home Remedies. Other cholesterol-lowering tricks involve walnuts, fish oil, red yeast rice, and Certo and grape juice.
