Australian researchers are considering whether probiotics might help soothe babies with colic. Previous research has found that the intestinal bacteria of colicky babies differ from those of babies who don’t cry and fuss incessantly.
The hypothesis that differences in intestinal flora might explain colicky behavior has been put forth and the value of probiotic supplements examined in 12 clinical trials. A meta-analysis found that in half of the studies probiotic supplements were helpful in easing or preventing colic; in the other half, unfortunately, the supplements made no significant difference.
Before pediatricians routinely recommend probiotics for colic, more research is needed. The investigators who completed this analysis are conducting a large randomized trial including both breast fed and formula fed babies.
Parents with colicky babies will no doubt be extremely relieved if this relatively simple remedy proves helpful. An infant’s colic can disrupt sleep and emotional equilibrium in the entire family.
