There’s good news for those who are moderate consumers of alcohol. A new meta-analysis of more than 70 studies found that light to moderate drinkers were 23 percent less likely than nondrinkers to develop dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Heavy drinkers are at greater risk for cognitive impairment. The investigators discourage nondrinkers from starting. But they point out that drinking limited to two alcoholic beverages per day or less for men and one or fewer for women can be beneficial.
