The Mediterranean diet appears to protect people against heart disease. Now, two new studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggest it may also protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease. In one study, more than 1800 elderly New Yorkers were tested every few years between 1992 and 2006. Their exercise and dietary habits were analyzed. The researchers found that those with the most physical activity as well as those who most closely followed a Mediterranean-type diet were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
A French study of 1400 older people living in Bordeaux lasted 5 years and found that those eating a Mediterranean diet did better on a test of mental function. The Mediterranean diet is rich in vegetables, fruits and beans and uses olive oil as the main source of fat. It appears to be a tasty way to improve the chance of enjoying a healthy old age.
