Malaria Vaccine Offers Hope

Malaria remains a world-wide scourge, killing nearly 800,000 people every year. The drugs that are prescribed to treat malaria can be toxic and many of the people who need them don’t have access to them. So the news this week that a new vaccine has been developed that is roughly 50% effective against severe bouts of the disease drew great praise from tropical disease experts. After 25 years of research and development, the new vaccine from GSK represents an important advance in the fight against malaria.
