Q. I have been taking tamoxifen for over three years for breast cancer. My neighbor says tamoxifen is a dangerous drug, and now I am concerned. Can you give me any information about this drug?
A. Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) is given to women to prevent a recurrence of breast cancer. It blocks the action of estrogen in the breast and studies show it is beneficial. There is no doubt that this medication saves lives by helping reduce the likelihood that breast cancer will return.
Tamoxifen has estrogen-like effects in other parts of the body, however. It can cause blood clots in the lungs or deep veins, and it increases the risk that cancer will develop in the lining of the uterus. This is why it is important for you to see your doctor regularly while you take this medication.
Here are some other side effects to be aware of while taking tamoxifen:
- Hot flashes
- Fatigue and/or headache
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Digestive tract upset (nausea & loss of appetite)
- Vaginal discharge
- Fluid retention and edema
- Visual problems
- Dryness of the vagina
- Hair loss
If you develop any symptom such as pain and swelling in your legs, shortness of breath or unusual vaginal bleeding, report it immediately to your physician!
