Heartland Virus Mystifies CDC

The CDC has identified a new form of tick borne disease. Known as the Heartland virus, it has been found so far in only two patients, both Missouri men who had been bitten by ticks. They developed serious illness with high fevers. The virus appears to be related to a type of virus carried by mosquitoes, sand flies and ticks in China. If confirmed, this adds to the number of diseases transmitted by tick bites. Others include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and babesiosis.
