Ginkgo biloba has become a popular herb in health food stores because of its reputation for improving circulation and brain function. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association a year ago showed that ginkgo was no better than placebo for delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Now new research shows that ginkgo is also not helpful in preventing strokes or heart attacks. A study published in the journal Circulation involved 3,000 people over 75 years of age. They were followed for six years. Although there was no benefit for reducing the risk of heart attacks or strokes, those taking ginkgo were less likely to be diagnosed with peripheral artery disease. This condition can make it painful to walk or exercise.
