Millions of people take low-dose aspirin to protect their hearts, but most take them at the wrong time of day. Scientists in the Netherlands compared morning and bedtime aspirin administration in 290 people who were already on this low-dose regimen.
Taking the aspirin in the evening significantly reduced blood platelet activity in the morning, when risk of a heart attack is highest. A clinical trial is necessary to determine whether or not taking aspirin at night will work better to reduce the chance of a heart attack or stroke.

We think that aspirin is a wonderful medicine when used appropriately. It does have side effects, however. If the Dutch researchers figure out how to boost the effectiveness in preventing heart attacks without also increasing the risks of gastrointestinal irritation, many people will benefit.
