Vegetable protein may be protective for the kidneys. Epidemiologists studied people with chronic kidney disease who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. The volunteers gave information about their diets, including animal and vegetable protein intake.
Those who got more of their protein from vegetable sources such as beans and legumes were less likely to die over the next 12 years. The risk dropped by 14 percent with each 10 grams of vegetable protein intake per day.
