A small case control study from France suggests that people with adequate levels of vitamin C circulating in their systems are less prone to hemorrhagic strokes. These bleeding strokes are less common than strokes caused by blood clots, but they are more dangerous.
The investigators examined blood levels of 65 people who had had bleeding in their brains and 65 healthy controls. The people who had not experienced a stroke had much higher blood levels of vitamin C. These findings are too preliminary to say that vitamin C can prevent hemorrhagic strokes, but this interesting observation supports previous studies with similar findings. The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology and has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, so watch this space for further developments.
