Doctors have reduced their reliance on drug company largesse, but there is still a long way to go before they are free of pharmaceutical industry influence. That is the conclusion from a national survey of nearly 1900 physicians. In 2004, 94 percent of the doctors surveyed acknowledged a relationship with drug companies. In 2009, that number had fallen to 84 percent. Approximately 70 percent accepted food or beverages from pharmaceutical representatives; about two-thirds took drug samples, and nearly 14 percent received direct compensation for lecturing or other professional activities.
