Q. I’d like to know what’s good to eat to help lower triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL. My husband has four coronary arteries blocked and will have surgery next week. I need to know what I can cook to help him recover his health.
A. For decades red meat was considered a prime culprit in the development of heart disease. A new analysis from Harvard of 20 studies involving more than one million individuals suggests that unprocessed meat is not linked to clogged arteries (Circulation, online, May 17, 2010).
Processed meat (bacon, bologna, hot dogs, sausage, etc) was associated with coronary artery disease and diabetes, however. Carbohydrates (especially sugars) also seem to be linked to higher triglycerides and bad LDL cholesterol (Journal of the American Medical Association, April 21, 2010).
We are sending you a copy of our book, The People’s Pharmacy Quick & Handy Home Remedies (online at www.peoplespharmacy.com) for suggestions about to what eat for heart health. Some of the best foods include nuts such as almonds, cashews and walnuts, beets, chocolate, cinnamon, oats and a low-carbohydrate diet.
