Desperate Diarrhea Victim Saved by Coconut Macaroon Cookies

Diarrhea may not seem like such a big deal until you are afflicted on a daily basis. For some, chronic diarrhea can become a life-threatening problem.

If it happens in Mexico we call it “Montezuma’s Revenge.” In India an attack would be “Delhi Belly” and in Russia travelers call it the “Trotskis.” When it happens at home we simply call it diarrhea.

Running back and forth to the bathroom is not fun. Some people suffer such severe and unpredictable diarrhea that it completely ruins the quality of their lives.

Q. Your suggestion of coconut macaroon cookies for diarrhea was a godsend for me. I’d had diarrhea for three years, and it was controlling my life. I tried various medicines, but none helped.

I stopped eating when I was out. If I had an appointment in the afternoon, I didn’t eat until I got home. This made for a long day.

When I read about the macaroons, I tried them. They worked so well, I couldn’t believe it. I could even go out to dinner and not be embarrassed.

I told my doctor about the remedy and she said she would pass it on. Later she told me it helped two of her patients.

A. Thank you for sharing your story. Many people have found that eating two coconut macaroon cookies daily can combat chronic diarrhea.

How Coconut Macaroon Cookies Were Discovered:

We first heard about this remedy from Donald Agar in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He wrote to us in November of 1998. Here is what he said:

“I have had Crohn’s disease for 40 years, and during that time I have had a never-ending battle with diarrhea. Lomotil helps some, but it doesn’t eliminate the problem.

“Three months ago, I bought a box of Archway Coconut Macaroon cookies. I’ve been eating two a day and I have not experienced diarrhea in that time. If by chance I eat three in a day, I get constipated. Believe me, I have a new life now.

“My brother-in-law has a friend who just had cancer and suffered diarrhea as a consequence of the operation. We told him about the cookies and they corrected his diarrhea. I would be delighted if others were helped by my discovery, too.”

At the end of the newspaper column we invited others to experiment with coconut macaroon cookies and let us know how well this seemingly simplistic remedy worked. Donald’s powers of observation and his report of his experience have helped countless folks afflicted with Crohn’s disease or other conditions causing chronic diarrhea.

We have to be honest and note that some report that two coconut macaroon cookies are ineffective, but a surprising number report similar success. We can’t explain why some people get such relief and others don’t. We suspect that coconut is the relevant ingredient.
