Researchers are asking the FDA to investigate the potential dangers of another class of medications called anticholinergics. Such drugs are widely prescribed for a variety of health conditions running from overactive bladder to asthma and allergies.
The popular over-the-counter antihistamine diphenhydramine, sold under the brand name Benadryl, is another example of a drug with anticholinergic activity. This ingredient is also found in many popular nighttime pain relievers such as Advil PM, Bayer Aspirin Pain Reliever PM and Tylenol PM.
Drugs with anticholinergic effects can have a devastating impact on older people. A new review of 27 studies reveals older people who take such medications are more likely to become confused and perform poorly on cognitive tests. They are also at higher risk for dementia. The scientists recommend that the FDA require labels on both OTC and prescription drugs about anticholinergic effects and that people over 65 should have their medications evaluated for anticholinergic activity. There are safer alternatives for most such medicines.
