Q. My husband has been diagnosed with celiac disease, which means he has to avoid wheat, barley and rye. A friend has suggested that he should also do a colon cleanse. I have my doubts, but would like your opinion on the advisability of such an approach.
A. People with celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, found in the grains you mentioned. When exposed to this protein many people with celiac disease may experience digestive tract symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea. We cannot imagine why taking strong laxatives to induce diarrhea for a colon “cleanse” would be helpful for anyone with celiac disease.
