Data from the Nurses’ Health Study suggests that women who drink coffee are less likely to develop endometrial cancer. This cancer of the uterine lining was 25 percent less common among women who drank at least four cups of coffee a day. Lower intake of two or three cups of java daily was linked to a more modest reduction in risk, about 7 percent. The Harvard scientists found that consuming decaf was also protective. They point out, however, that this observational study is not a controlled trial, and something else about coffee drinkers might explain the results. Nonetheless, coffee is a major source of antioxidants in the American diet, and it is good to know that it has another possible benefit.
