Chapped Lips Need Relief

Q. I am addicted to lip balm. If I don’t have a tube in my pocket it feels like an emergency.

Even when I apply it repeatedly the relief is short lived. Is there something in this type of product that actually makes chapped lips worse?

A. The idea of lip-balm addiction is controversial and confusing. Many dermatologists maintain that the dependence is psychological or results from persistent lip licking.

Some lip balms contain ingredients such as peppermint oil that may cause allergic reactions (Dermatitis, April, 2010). This could lead to dryness and chapping. If your usual brand contains peppermint oil, look for one that does not.

We have just introduced our new lip care products, with all natural ingredients and no petroleum-based components. You may find that our pomegranate lip balm is more soothing and your may not feel the urge to overuse it.
