The World Health Organization has classified cellphone use as “possibly carcinogenic.” For decades, scientists have debated the data linking electromagnetic field exposure to cancer. Numerous studies have resulted in conflicting evidence. Until now, the WHO has maintained that was no connection between cell phone use and cancer.
Now a team of 31 scientists from 14 different countries have reviewed all the relevant research and concluded that there may be a link between mobile phone use and an increased risk of glioma brain cancer.
The cell phone industry was quick to point out that this conclusion does not mean cell phones cause cancer, only that there might be a possibility of a risk. Not surprisingly, the scientists say much more in-depth research is needed to better understand the nature of this relationship.
Despite all the uncertainty, we have been concerned about electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation for more than 40 years. If you want to know why, check out a blog Joe wrote on April 28, 2008 titled “Hazards from Hybrids?” You may find this article and the comments of interest.
Until the final answer is in about EMF exposure from cell phones, people may want to take steps to minimize exposure by texting, using speakerphone capability or using hands free devices.
