Most of us have no idea how many calories there are in the meals and snacks we eat, but that could soon change.
Calorie Counts
The FDA will require restaurants, pizza places and even movie theaters to post calorie counts on their printed menus or menu boards. Some prepared food sold in grocery stores will also be subject to this requirement, along with beer, wine and other drinks on menus.
The rules won’t kick in for about a year, and during that interim there is likely to be plenty of fighting and maneuvering to try to circumvent them.
Do Labels Help Us Eat Less?
It is not clear whether such labels are very helpful in the public health fight against obesity, but restaurants in New York City have been posting calorie counts for eight years. The requirement has not put them out of business.
Other Approaches
There are a number of ways to reduce the number of calories we consume without even noticing. Brian Wansink, PhD, has written an entertaining and informative book, Mindless Eating.
